Emmerdale's Jaye Griffiths has warned Celia Daniels won't go down without a fight if her criminal empire is ever exposed. The actress, 62, revealed that she always knew her time in the soap was "finite," hinting that the walls will eventually close in on Celia and her son, Ray Walters (Joe Absolom). The pair have cemented themselves as one of Emmerdale's most sinister duos, exploiting the vulnerable and corrupting the young to maintain their criminal empire. They have made Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) and April Windsor (Amelia Flangan) sell drugs for them, and have forced the teen into having sex with clients for money.
The vulnerable Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) has now been dragged into their twisted world, with last night's episode confirming the heartbreaking fate he has been forced to endure for last 100 days. Locked in a dirty basement with no way of contacting anyone, Bear has been completely stripped of his freedom. But as every soap fan knows, evil never stays hidden forever. With time running out, it seems inevitable that Celia and Ray's true identities and crimes will soon be exposed.
When asked how Celia would react if her crimes were ever exposed, Jaye revealed that her character would do whatever it takes to save herself, and confirmed she will not accept a life behind bars.
The actress said: "I think you'll see annoyance. It won't be the first time that it's had to be dissolved and moved. The idea that she would get caught - inconceivable. No. She will move blame, she will throw anyone under the bus before herself. She's not going to prison."
Jaye also acknowledged that her storyline was always destined to be short-lived, admitting: "I knew it was finite which I am very sad about because I would like to stay forever."
In real life, Celia's crimes reflect a dark reality. Statistics show that modern slavery remains one of the most common forms of forced labour, where vulnerable victims, like Bear, are groomed, trapped, and exploited with no means of escape.
Jaye explained: "It's not happening far away, it's happening next door. She says a line to Ray, 'We never take locals.' You don't take people who will be missed. You take the strays and you give them purpose and routine and you don't give them any options. It's hideous. Just when you think she's gone far enough, they make me go a bit further.
"It's horrendous and hopefully maybe conversations will start to be had. Maybe a question will run through people's minds. I've learned more about modern slavery rather more than I'd like. It's utterly depressing that we treat our fellow humans like this."
The soap star admitted she's fascinated by what shaped Celia into the woman she's become, believing her character has endured some form of trauma in her past.
She continued: "You think what happened to make you like this, because you weren't born like this. What happened to make you so unfeeling, to not ever care, to see all your enslaved as livestock. Something very very bad has happened to her. Not to excuse her, but it would explain. She didn't come out the womb like this."
However, one thing Jaye did confirm is that at some point in Celia's life, someone tried to take her head, leaving her with a large scar on her neck. The actress revealed this is the reason Celia is rarely seen without her signature cravat.
"She wears a cravat because someone has tried to cut her head off," Jaye said. "It's very subtle and it's only half way across because they didn't succeed in cutting her throat."
The former Doctors star admitted she asked Emmerdale executives to not tell scripts because she never wants it mentioned on screen.
"There's a lovely bit where Bob looks and my neck and his eyes flick away, and that's the only time. It's just a hint at her former life, a life elsewhere that bad things have happened to her," Jaye added.
