National Desk: A heartbreaking incident occurred late Sunday night in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Seven patients tragically died and several others were seriously injured in a fire at the trauma center of Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Hospital, the state's largest government hospital. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. Sunday night in the ICU on the second floor of the trauma center, when most of the patients were on ventilators and other life support systems.
How the fire started
According to the hospital administration, preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit as the cause of the fire. Trauma Center in-charge Dr. Anurag Dhakad said that at the time of the accident, a total of 18 patients were admitted in the ICU and semi-ICU. Of these, 11 patients were in the same ward where the fire broke out. As soon as the fire broke out, smoke and toxic gases emanating from the machines there made the situation worse. Dr. Dhakad said that many patients were already in critical condition or in coma, due to which their response was weak. By the time the patients were shifted downstairs, 7 patients had died. The deceased included 4 men and 2 women.
