I tried Aldi's new mystery fizzy drinks and got the flavours completely wrong

Send Push

Aldi shoppers might have spotted this latest mystery during their usual supermarket shop, like I did. The label of Aldi's new 'Guess the Flavour' drinks challenged me, and I felt compelled to give them a go and put my tastebuds to the test.

I was never drawn into the hype of Fanta's mystery line that first appeared on shop shelves in 2020. But, I'll admit, it did seem like a fun and interesting way to get people to try new flavours. Although I'm sure I will not be alone in wanting to know exactly what I'm buying and drinking.

Unlike Fanta, Aldi's new mystery bottles won't keep you in suspense for long. Shoppers can peel off the label to reveal the actual flavour. I did spot someone in Aldi trying to cheat and peek at the answer before buying, but it's almost impossible to see without removing the whole label.

After a while, Aldi's mystery packaging convinced me enough to buy two bottles. I went home with both versions of the 69p mystery drink and didn't hesitate to pour myself a glass once back in my kitchen.

Known only as Flavour 1 and Flavour 2, you're given literally nothing to go on other than your own sense of taste and smell. Many people on social media have suggested checking the label for clues, but it just calls the blend a 'Mixed Fruit Flavour Soft Drink', which helped narrow down any wild guesses to something fruity.

Out of both drinks, this was the one I liked the most. It tasted just the right balance of sweet and fruity, and it had a pleasant smell, which added to its enjoyment. I liked whatever the flavour was and gladly finished the glass.

It felt like a lovely summer drink that I could see myself sipping in the garden. When I peeled off the label, the mixture made so much sense. And, going back for a second glass that evening, I could certainly spot the different flavours much more easily.

  • Flavour guess: strawberry and/or raspberry

I couldn't quite put my finger on what I was experiencing when I sipped this glass of fizz, which I suppose is the whole point! But, compared to the other flavour, I'd probably not buy this again.

It definitely tasted somewhat fruity, just not one I'd eat regularly, and it smelled wildly different from the first drink. I wasn't picking up any berries, which is what I assumed the flavours might be based on the colour of the drinks, so I had to rack my brain on this with a few more mouthfuls.

But I couldn't get over the overwhelming sweetness, and I couldn't stomach the entire drink I'd poured. Now knowing the actual blend of flavours, I should have known one ingredient as it's something I just can't stand. This bottle really messed with my taste buds and, in the end, I locked in a guess just so I could stop drinking.

  • Flavour guess: apple or grapefruit

I've since seen lots of people on TikTok try these drinks out and struggle to figure out what's inside. Guesses ranged from watermelon and cherry to bubblegum and candy floss—which are all wrong, by the way. Comment below what you think the flavours could be.

I locked in my guesses above, and both also turned out to be wrong. I won't spoil the results for anyone who wants to try for themselves and guess what they are.

I will give you a hint, though. Don't focus too much on the colour of the drinks, their looks are most definitely deceiving. If you do want to find out what the flavours are, scroll down to find out.

Flavour one: blackberry, orange and vanilla. Flavour two: peach, lime and cream.
