New Delhi [India], August 28 (ANI): On the 11-year completion of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday emphasised how India's economy has progressed over the years and how crores of citizens have been connected to the financial system.
CM Dhami on X said, "The visionary foresight and resolve of the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji laid the foundation for a transformation 11 years ago, which gave a new direction to India's economic progress. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, launched 11 years ago, connected crores of citizens to the financial system and laid the cornerstone of an empowered India."

"Today, through more than 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts, the work of empowering citizens with self-reliance, connecting villages to the economic mainstream, and achieving financial inclusion is unprecedented," Uttarakhand CM added.
CM Dhami further emphasised that PMJDY is a historic initiative for the crores of people. "This is not just a scheme, but a historic initiative that gives wings to the dreams of crores of people," he said.
Launched on August 28, 2014, PMJDY is one of the world's largest financial inclusion initiatives. Over 56.16 crore bank accounts have been opened under the PMJDY, with total deposits reaching Rs 2.67 lakh crore as of mid-August 2025, according to the statement from the Economy sector.
"56% Jan Dhan accounts belong to women, highlighting the scheme's role in promoting gender equality in financial access," the statement added.
The PMJDY was launched as National Mission for Financial Inclusion, set out to give every unbanked adult in India a bank account, a financial identity, and access to essential services like credit, insurance, and pensions. Guided by the mission of banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured, funding the unfunded, and serving the unserved and underserved, PMJDY has grown into the largest financial inclusion initiative in the world.
According to the Economy sector, PMJDY has evolved into the foundation for numerous economic and welfare initiatives, enabling Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) for 327 government schemes, eliminating leakages and middlemen.
Accounts have grown from 14.72 crore in 2015 to over 56.16 crore by August 2025, with around 67% in rural/semi-urban areas and 33% of Jan Dhan accounts were opened in urban/ metro areas. 33% of Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in urban/metro areas while 67% opened in rural/semi-urban areas. (ANI)
